It was the 97th World Series pennant that was on the line as the reigning 2000 World Series Champs, New York Yankees went on to defend their title against the Arizona Diamondbacks. The Arizona Diamondbacks were a fairly new team and had aces Randy Johnson and Curt Schilling to lead a 4-0 win percentage with a extremely low ERA. They later on will become co-MVP's.

The Yankees failed to defend their title against the Diamondbacks in a thriller in which Luis Gonzalez hit a single over Derek Jeter to end the series. This heart-pounding series of 7 games was the first Series in which the Diamondbacks won and only in their 4th year of existence.
